**Past event**
We are excited to be once again offering the Mentoring Asian American Professionals (MAAP) program in DC this spring. MAAP will cultivate the next generation of Asian Pacific American professional leaders through mentoring, skills building, and networking. The program pairs professionals with experienced leaders in their field. As part of the mentoring process, participants will create a personal strategic plan allowing them to identify ways to achieve professional as well as personal goals.
Who should participate?
Mentees
- Asian American professional with interest in exploring professional development process with a mentor
- Commitment to developing new personal/professional skills through four 1:1 mentoring meetings and three network convening
Mentors
- 5-10 years professional experience
- Supervisory/ management experience preferred (but not necessary)
- Well-rounded personal and professional background, i.e. experience with community involvement, volunteerism, etc.
What is the time commitment?
The entire program cycle spans approximately two-and-a-half months, which includes four one-on-one mentoring sessions and three network convenings of half-day sessions on the following Saturdays.
- Saturday, September 12th, 2015: Introductory network convening, which is a program orientation and introduction to MAAP
- Saturday, October 3rd, 2015: Midway network convening, which is focused on networking, communication, and negotiation
- Saturday, November 7th, 2015: Final network convening, which is focused on social responsibility and career planning
Between the introductory and final network convenings, we also ask mentors and mentees to hold four one-on-one mentoring meetings, which are focused on exploring the following professional development topics: networking, communications, decision making, and leadership.
Where are the convenings?
TBD (8/18/15)
Each mentoring team will decide when and where to hold the 1:1 mentoring meetings.
How much does it cost?
The program has been designed to benefit the mentees as well as the mentors to improve their capacity for strong relationship building, sharpen their analytical skills, and to further master the art of dialogue. Because of the mutually beneficial nature of the program philosophy and design, the program participation fees apply equally for both mentees as well as mentors.
- OCA members: Free
- Non-members: $40, which includes an optional one-year membership to OCA
- *Fees are waived for UPS Employees
Note that the mentoring meetings that are arranged between the mentoring pairs may take place over coffee or lunch. The costs associated with mentoring meetings will be the responsibility of the mentoring team.
